Hey there, friends! I recently had an inspiring chat on the “Take Your Shot” podcast with Hallie Heather on how to craft your ideal workday. If you haven’t heard it yet, give it a listen below. It was a deep dive into my journey from wedding photography to empowering others as a business coach. This transformation was not just about changing careers; it was about reshaping my entire approach to work and life.

The Power of Taking A Break

In 2018, I made a daring decision that transformed my life and business: I pressed pause on my work for three months. This wasn’t a mere hiatus; it was a pivotal moment of introspection and growth. During this period, I wasn’t just resting; I was actively reassessing every aspect of my business. During this break, I delved into rethinking my business strategies. I asked myself tough questions: What was working? What wasn’t? Where did I see my business in the next five years? This period of reflection was crucial in identifying areas that needed change.

One of the significant shifts I made was implementing CRM platforms. This change was a game-changer. It streamlined client interactions, organized my workflow, and automated many mundane tasks. This integration not only saved me time but also reduced the mental load of keeping track of every detail. It meant I could focus more on creative aspects and client relations, the parts of my business that truly energized me.

But this break was more than about optimizing business operations; it was a journey towards a better work-life balance. I realized that to be truly effective and creative, I needed to take care of myself. This time off allowed me to recharge, to pursue personal interests, and to spend quality time with loved ones.

As I resumed work, I brought back not just new tools and strategies, but a renewed sense of purpose and enthusiasm. I understood that stepping back occasionally is not a sign of weakness, but a strategic move for long-term success. This break taught me that sometimes, the best way to move forward in your career and life is to momentarily step away, reflect, and recalibrate. It’s a lesson I carry with me and advocate for in my coaching: the power of taking a break can be the very thing that propels you forward.

Embracing Small, Intentional Changes

I’ve always underscored the importance of small, intentional changes. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the big picture, but true transformation lies in the details. Simple actions like streamlining email workflows can make a significant difference. By setting up automated responses or organizing your inbox with labels and folders, you reduce the clutter and the time spent on repetitive tasks. Similarly, planning your social media content – perhaps dedicating a day to create posts for the entire week – can free up so much mental space.

The beauty of these small steps is their cumulative effect. Just think about it – saving even 10 minutes a day adds up to over 60 hours a year! That’s valuable time you can invest back into your business or personal life. Embracing small changes requires a mindset shift. It’s about recognizing that success isn’t always about doing more; sometimes, it’s about doing things smarter. By focusing on these small, intentional steps, we’re essentially fine-tuning our daily routines, making our work more manageable and enjoyable. This approach fosters a sustainable work environment where you’re continuously improving without burning out. In the long run, these small changes can redefine how you work, leading you to a more fulfilling and balanced professional life.

Cultivating Success Through Habits and Systems

As a business coach, I firmly believe in the transformative power of cultivating effective habits and systems. One impactful strategy is to categorize your business tasks into three types: life-giving, life-draining, and neutral. Life-giving tasks are those that energize you and align closely with your passions and strengths. These are the tasks where you should invest most of your energy and creativity. On the other hand, life-draining tasks are those necessary evils that sap your energy. Identifying these allows you to consider delegation or automation, freeing you up to focus on what you do best. Neutral tasks are those that don’t particularly excite or drain you.

The next step is developing habits and systems that support your most valuable tasks while efficiently managing or outsourcing the rest. It involves setting up routines and using tools that enhance efficiency, such as automating repetitive tasks or setting specific times for email checking. The key is consistency and adaptation, continuously refining these systems to suit your evolving business needs. By doing so, you not only improve your work efficiency but also create a more balanced and enjoyable work environment.

The Art of Delegating

Mastering the art of delegation transformed the way I approached my business. The initial decision to hire a part-time social media manager marked the beginning of this journey. As my team grew, I was able to focus more on the areas where I excelled and enjoyed the most, such as creative direction and client interactions. Delegating tasks that were necessary but not personally fulfilling enabled me to dedicate more energy to what truly mattered and what I loved doing. This approach not only improved my business’s efficiency and output but also significantly enhanced my job satisfaction and creativity. It’s a strategy that has proven invaluable, allowing me to cultivate a team that supports the business’s vision while also enabling me to thrive in doing what I do best.

My Daily Practice for Peak Efficiency

I practice what I preach by incorporating simple but effective daily routines. These include:

  • Grounding exercises, like spending a few minutes barefoot outdoors.
  • Regular breaks throughout the day to maintain focus and energy.
  • Self-care routines that keep me feeling refreshed and ready for the day’s challenges.
