Family mini sessions in Minneapolis are short, focused photo sessions, usually 20 to 25 minutes, made for families who want real photos without giving up an afternoon. You show up, you play, and you leave with a gallery you will actually use on holiday cards, in frames, and in the group chat with grandparents.

If you have ever put off family photos because it felt like too much (the planning, the outfits, the toddler’s nap schedule), a mini session was built for you.

What is a family mini session?

A family mini session is a shorter version of a full family photo session. Instead of an hour of walking between spots, you spend about 20 to 25 minutes in one place with a photographer who keeps things moving.

Short does not mean rushed. Because the session is focused, kids do not hit their limit halfway through. The photos stay full of energy, and the moments you get are the ones you wanted: your kids leaning into you, your partner laughing, everyone looking like themselves.

What a family mini session looks like at Abide Studios

Our holiday family mini sessions in Minneapolis take place at Abide Studios. Because the session is indoors, the weather never decides your photo day. There is no checking the forecast and no scrambling to reschedule because of rain or a cold snap.

Here is how a session flows:

  • Arrive and settle in. Come a few minutes early so everyone can get comfortable.
  • Warm up with a little play. We start easy so kids ease into it instead of freezing up.
  • Move through a few simple setups. Together, parents with kids, and a few close-ups.
  • Leave with 25 professionally edited photos. Enough variety for a holiday card, a framed print, and your favorites to share.

Prefer to stay home? We also offer in-home mini sessions on select dates, which can be a great fit for families with babies or little ones who do best in familiar spaces.

Current dates (update each season): Holiday studio mini at Abide Studios on November 15, 8 AM to 12 PM. In-home mini on November 29. Spots are limited, so check the booking page for what is still open.

Why families love family mini sessions

They fit real life. A mini session takes less time than most errands. That makes it easy to book, easy to get to, and easy to say yes to.

They work for kids with short attention spans. Twenty minutes is about how long a toddler or a skeptical teenager can stay happy and present. Shorter sessions often mean better expressions.

They take the pressure off. One place, one outfit plan, one short block of time. There is less to coordinate, so you can focus on being together.

They capture connection, not just poses. The best family photos are rarely the stiff ones. They are the half-second when your youngest reaches for your hand, or your oldest cracks a joke. A mini session gives us enough time to catch those moments and not so much time that everyone gets tired.

Mini session or full session: which is right for you?

Both are good choices. The difference is mostly about how much time and variety you want.

A mini session is a great fit if:

  • You want updated family photos or holiday card photos without a big time commitment
  • Your kids are young, or do best in short bursts
  • You like a simple plan and a single location
  • You are trying family photos for the first time and want an easy start

A full session is a better fit if:

  • You want more time to move around and try a variety of setups
  • You are celebrating a milestone and want a larger story
  • You have a bigger family or multiple generations and want extra time for every combination

Not sure which one fits? Here is how to decide whether professional family photos are worth it, and you can always email us and we will point you in the right direction.

How to prepare for your family mini session

A little prep goes a long way when the session is short.

  1. Pick outfits that coordinate, not match. Choose a shared color palette and let each person’s style show. Our guide on what to wear for your family photoshoot in Minneapolis walks through it.
  2. Schedule around snacks and rest. Aim for a well-fed, well-rested crew.
  3. Keep the mood light. Tell the kids it is a fun outing, not a photo shoot. Playful kids make better photos.
  4. Arrive a few minutes early. A calm start sets the tone for the whole session.
  5. Skip the pressure to be perfect. Messy hair and big giggles are part of the story.

Frequently asked questions about family mini sessions

How long is a family mini session? A typical mini session runs about 20 to 25 minutes.

How many photos do we get? Holiday mini sessions include 25 professionally edited photos.

Are family mini sessions only for the holidays? The holidays are the most popular time, because families want fresh photos for cards and gifts. Dates change by season, so check the booking page for what is open now.

What should we wear? Choose coordinating colors in comfortable clothes your family feels good in. Avoid heavy logos, and bring layers if you like options.

Can we do a mini session at home instead of the studio? Yes. In-home mini sessions are offered on select dates. The booking page lists what is available.
