What to Wear for Headshots: Outfit Inspo That Works on Camera
It’s the night before your session. Your bed is covered in blazers, and nothing looks right.
We hear this every week. And here’s the truth about what to wear for headshots: the camera only sees about a third of you. Your pants don’t matter. Your shoes don’t matter. What matters is everything between your collarbone and your chin.
Once you know that, getting dressed gets a lot easier.
Below is the outfit inspo we give our own headshot clients. It covers colors, necklines, fit, and the small details that make a big difference.

The Short Answer on What to Wear for Headshots
Wear a solid color that flatters your skin, with a clean neckline and a top that fits well at the shoulders. Choose something you’d wear to meet your dream client, not something you’d wear to a gala.
That’s it. Everything else is detail.
Why does this matter so much? Your headshot shows up small. Think LinkedIn circles, podcast guest pages, and speaker bios. LinkedIn’s own research found that simply having a profile photo makes your profile 14 times more likely to get viewed.
At that size, busy clothes turn into noise. Simple clothes let your face do the work.

Headshot Outfit Ideas That Photograph Well
These headshot outfit ideas work across almost every industry we photograph.
A structured blazer. A blazer gives your shoulders shape and reads as polished. Wear it over a simple tee or shell.
A textured knit. Ribbed sweaters and chunky knits add depth without pulling focus. They’re perfect for Minnesota fall and winter sessions.
A crisp collared shirt. Collars frame your face. Leave the top button open unless your field is very formal.
A jewel-toned top. Emerald, sapphire, deep plum, and rust flatter most skin tones. They also stand out against neutral backdrops.
Your signature layer. Do you always wear a denim jacket to client meetings? Bring it. Your headshot should look like the person clients meet.
Bring two or three options. We’ll help you choose on the day, based on the backdrop and light.

The Best Colors for Headshots (And Which to Skip)
Here’s our favorite test. Think about the color people compliment you in. Wear that.
Solid colors almost always win. Small patterns, thin stripes, and tiny checks can create a wavy effect on camera. Big logos pull eyes away from your face.
Wear: navy, charcoal, cream, soft blush, olive, and rich jewel tones.
Be careful with: bright white and pure black. White can glow too much near fair skin. Black can swallow detail, especially with dark hair. Both can work. Just add texture or a layer.
Skip: neon, busy prints, and anything with words on it.
One more tip. Think about your brand colors, but don’t feel bound by them. A headshot should flatter you first. Your website can carry the brand palette.

Necklines, Fit, and the Details Nobody Warns You About
Because the frame sits so close, small details carry weight.
Necklines. V-necks and open collars lengthen your neck. Crew necks work well too. Very high turtlenecks can shorten the neck in a tight crop.
Fit at the shoulders. Shoulder seams should land at your shoulders. Too big looks sloppy. Too tight pulls across the chest.
Steam everything. Wrinkles show up far more on camera than in a mirror.
Skip the brand-new outfit. New clothes often hold fold creases. They can also make you stiff, because you don’t feel like yourself yet.
Jewelry. Keep it simple. One pair of earrings or one necklace is plenty.
Glasses. If you wear them every day, wear them in your headshot. People should recognize you when you walk into the room.
And sometimes, one bold piece is exactly right. When Tatiana Budney came in for her business headshots in Minneapolis, she wore a red duster coat. It worked because it matched her energy. Bold isn’t the risk. Wearing something that isn’t you is the risk.

Why Picking Your Outfit Feels So Hard
Let’s be honest. The stress isn’t really about the blazer.
Most of our clients have put this off for years. They’ve used a cropped wedding photo or an old conference snapshot. Meanwhile, they’ve become really good at what they do. The old photo just doesn’t show it.
So the outfit starts to feel like it carries the whole weight of “Do I look like someone worth hiring?”
Here’s what we tell them. Your outfit’s job is small. It just needs to stay out of the way.
The confidence comes from the session itself. We coach you through posing, expression, and angles the entire time. You don’t have to know what to do with your hands. That’s our job.

Headshot Outfit Questions We Hear Most
How many outfits should I bring to a headshot session? Bring two or three. We usually photograph one or two, and pick based on how each reads on camera.
Should I wear white for headshots? Off-white and cream are safer than bright white. They’re softer on skin and won’t glow against the backdrop.
Can I wear black for headshots? Yes. Choose a black with texture, like a knit or structured blazer, so it doesn’t look flat.
Do I need to match my brand colors? No. Flattering beats on-brand. Your website and graphics can carry your brand palette.

Planning Your Minneapolis Headshot Session
Minneapolis seasons matter more than people expect. Summer sessions call for lighter layers and breathable fabrics. Winter sessions are perfect for knits, wool blazers, and rich colors.
If we shoot outdoors, we’ll talk about how your outfit plays against the location. A navy blazer pops against fall leaves. A cream sweater glows against a brick wall downtown.
Still unsure what to wear for headshots? Our team helps you plan before your session. Send us photos of your options, and we’ll tell you which ones will shine.
