Their Keller Golf Course wedding in Maplewood, MN, just outside Minneapolis, did exactly that, starting with a ceremony at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Saint Paul and ending under the willow trees at golden hour.

The morning started at 1460 Almond Avenue, where Kathleen and Dan both got ready in the same building before walking into Mount Olive Lutheran Church for the ceremony. The sanctuary is simple and warm, with wood paneling that runs floor to ceiling and a stained glass window that catches the light right behind the altar.

Kathleen’s grandmother, who used a wheelchair for the day, sat close to the front so she wouldn’t miss a thing. That kind of detail matters more than most couples realize going in. It’s the difference between photos that look staged and photos that hold an entire family’s story in one frame.

Dan wore a black top hat through the reception, which turned into one of the most memorable choices of the day. Paired with Kathleen’s lace-trained gown and a bouquet heavy on deep red roses, the two of them against the ivy wall looked like they’d stepped out of a different decade entirely.

Dan’s family flew in extended relatives from out of state, and Kathleen’s side made sure her grandmother was part of nearly every formal photo despite the extra time it took to get her positioned comfortably. Neither of these things were on a shot list.
