If you’re looking for one location that can carry an entire senior session, Wayzata Docks might be it. We shot Rachel, Eve, and Grant here this year. Each session happened on a different day, in a different outfit. Even so, we came away with three galleries that don’t look anything alike. Wayzata Docks gives you water, boats, and long wooden walkways. In the evening, the light bounces low off the lake. It’s clean without feeling staged. Because of that, it photographs well no matter what your senior brings to the session.

Rachel leaned into the classic dock look. She wore a navy top and white pants, resting against one of the pilings with the lake stretching out behind her. Eve went softer instead, in a blue striped dress that caught the wind as she walked. She glanced back over her shoulder partway down the dock. Grant kept it simple and relaxed. He sat on the edge with his legs hanging over the water, a couple of boats docked just behind him.

Getting the Most Out of an Evening on the Docks

We book these sessions in the evening, closer to sunset. That’s when the light softens and the water goes calm. So that’s the window where the dock stops looking like a dock. It starts looking like the kind of backdrop people ask about in the comments.

We also keep some of our favorite dock spots close to the vest. A big part of what makes these galleries feel special is that they don’t look like every other senior’s photos from the same summer.
