Fall family photos in Minneapolis have a short window. The color peaks fast, the light gets golden earlier every week, and if you wait too long to plan, you’re stuck choosing between bare branches and a rushed weekend.

Two questions come up in almost every planning call: where should we go, and what should we wear. Both matter more than people expect, and they work together more than most guides let on. Here’s how to get both right.

Best Locations for Fall Family Photos in Minneapolis

Not every park photographs well in fall. Some peak too early, some are too crowded on weekends, and some look great in photos but offer nowhere for kids to actually move.

Arneson Acres Park in Edina is one of our go-to spots. The mix of structured gardens and mature trees gives you both a polished look and genuine fall color, and there’s enough open space for kids to walk instead of pose the whole time.

Boom Island Park works well for families who want a more open, playful feel. Downtown’s skyline peeking through the trees adds a Minneapolis-specific backdrop you won’t get at a generic park, and there’s plenty of room for kids to run between shots.

For a deeper look at past fall sessions and more location ideas, our fall session gallery from last year has real examples from families we’ve photographed around the city.

Timing matters as much as the location. Minneapolis fall color typically peaks in the first two to three weeks of October, though it shifts year to year. Booking early in the season gives you room to move your date if the color is behind schedule.

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos

The biggest mistake families make with outfits is aiming for matching instead of coordinated. Matching reads stiff in photos. Coordinated reads intentional.

Pick a palette of two or three colors, then let each person choose their own pieces within it. One person in a rust sweater, another in cream, another in olive. Nobody’s wearing the exact same shirt, but the group still looks pulled together.

Warm neutrals photograph best against Minneapolis fall foliage: rust, terracotta, olive, cream, camel, and deep denim. These tones sit alongside the oranges and golds in the trees instead of competing with them. Cool tones like navy or forest green work too, especially for families who want something a little moodier.

Texture adds depth a flat color palette can’t. A chunky knit next to a smooth blouse next to soft denim reads richer in photos than five identical cotton tees. If your family already leans toward coordinating without looking costumed, the same approach applies here with warmer tones.

Avoid busy patterns, logos, and anything neon. They pull the eye away from faces, which is the opposite of what you want in a photo you’ll hang on your wall.

Dressing Multiple Kids (and a Dog) Without a Fight

If you have more than one kid, or a dog joining the session, comfort has to come before color coordination or nobody’s smiling by the second location.

Let kids have some say in what they’re wearing, even if it’s just picking between two pre-approved, already color-matched options. A child who feels comfortable in soft layers gives you a real smile. A child fighting a scratchy collar will not.

Bring a backup outfit for anyone under age six. Grass, snacks, and unexpected puddles happen, especially at a park.

For dogs, a simple bandana or collar in your palette color is plenty. Don’t put your dog in a full sweater unless they’re already used to wearing one. Shoes matter too. Comfortable, broken-in shoes mean fewer complaints and better walking shots between poses.

Layering for Minneapolis Fall Weather

Minnesota fall doesn’t hold still. According to National Weather Service Twin Cities climate data, Minneapolis fall afternoons can swing more than 20 degrees between a chilly morning and a warm midday, especially in September and October.

Layers solve this. A light jacket or cardigan over a sweater lets everyone adjust as the session goes on, and it adds texture to the photos too. Keep outer layers in the same palette so nothing clashes once they come off.

If your session is scheduled for golden hour, plan for it to cool down fast once the sun starts dropping. Bring the extra layer even if it feels unnecessary when you leave the house.
