If you want senior photos that don’t look like everyone else’s backyard or basketball court shots, Mill Ruins Park and Boom Island in downtown Minneapolis might be the answer. That’s exactly where Henry and I ended up for his session, and honestly, it delivered every look we needed in one afternoon: industrial brick, open riverfront lawn, and a city skyline that shows up in almost every frame.

Best places to take senior pictures around the city

Why Mill Ruins Park Works for Senior Pictures

Mill Ruins Park sits right along the Mississippi River near the Stone Arch Bridge, and it’s one of those Minneapolis spots that photographs like three different locations in one. There’s the historic brick and ironwork left over from the old flour mills, tall ornamental grasses that catch the light beautifully in late afternoon, and modern architectural details like the ribbed metal wall Henry leaned against for a few of his shots.

For a senior session, that variety matters. We moved from brick walls to a stone ledge to a wooden boardwalk without leaving the park, and every setup gave Henry a different mood, from polished and put-together to relaxed and candid.

Boom Island: The Second Stop

A short drive from Mill Ruins Park, Boom Island Park gave us a completely different backdrop: open lawn, tree canopy, and a picnic table that turned into one of my favorite candid shots of the day. Where Mill Ruins Park is brick and structure, Boom Island is soft and green, which is exactly why the two locations work so well back to back.

If your senior wants a session that doesn’t feel like one location on repeat, pairing a structured spot like Mill Ruins Park with an open, natural one like Boom Island is an easy way to get real range out of a single afternoon.

Downtown Minneapolis Senior Pictures, All in One Afternoon

Part of what makes a session like this work is proximity. Mill Ruins Park and Boom Island both sit close to downtown, so we were able to add a quick stop at a mural for a completely different feel, plus a few frames with Henry’s mom, without losing the afternoon to drive time.

That’s the advantage of shooting downtown over a single suburban park: more textures, more backdrops, and a session that feels like it covers a lot of ground in a short window.

Henry’s Session: Confident, Not Stiff

Henry came into this session with an easy, unbothered confidence, and that’s exactly what we were after. He wasn’t trying to look like anyone else. Arms crossed, a half-smile, looking just off camera, those small choices in his poses did more work than a forced grin ever could.

That’s usually the goal with senior guys specifically: photos that feel like him, not like a catalog. We kept movement natural, let him lean against walls and sit wherever felt comfortable, and pulled in close for a few portraits when the light got good.

Moms, this is the part you’ll appreciate: even in the more “cool guy” shots, there’s still warmth in his expression. And the photo with Henry and his mom in front of the mural is the kind of image that ends up meaning more five years from now than it does today.

Ready to Book?

If you’re a senior (or a senior’s mom) looking at Mill Ruins Park, Boom Island, or anywhere else downtown for senior pictures, I’d love to help you figure out what fits your style best. Every session starts with a conversation about what you actually want your photos to feel like, not just where we’re standing.
