The leaves crunch under tiny feet, laughter fills the crisp autumn air, and the golden light makes everything glow. 🍂 That’s the magic of fall family photos in Minneapolis — where every session feels like stepping into a warm, fleeting memory.
As a Minneapolis family photographer, fall is hands-down my favorite season to photograph families. Between the cozy sweaters, fiery leaves, and spontaneous giggles, every moment looks and feels like pure magic.

Why Fall Family Photos Are So Special
There’s something unmistakably nostalgic about autumn in Minnesota. The city transforms into a canvas of amber, rust, and gold — and every session captures that perfect mix of warmth and connection.
Some of my favorite fall sessions happen at Minnehaha Falls, Lake Harriet, Boom Island Park, and Lyndale Rose Garden — each offering its own kind of magic. Whether it’s toddlers throwing leaves into the air, parents wrapped in a plaid blanket, or grandparents joining for generational portraits, fall brings out the best in everyone.

One of our favorite memories this season was with these families. Their toddler was determined to collect every leaf in sight — he ran through piles of color, stopping only to hand his mom the “perfect one.” It was simple and real — the kind of moment that makes you want to freeze time.
When to Book Fall Family Photos in Minneapolis
If you’re dreaming of vibrant color, the best time for fall family photos in Minneapolis is from late September through mid-October. That’s when the parks and tree-lined neighborhoods are bursting with fiery hues.
Because this season is so short (and so popular!), we always recommend booking 4–6 weeks in advance to secure your date and favorite location.

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos
Your wardrobe can completely elevate the look of your photos — and fall is all about texture, layers, and warmth.
Go for neutral and earthy tones like rust, olive, cream, camel, or denim. These colors photograph beautifully against the golden fall foliage without competing with the background.
A few quick outfit tips:
- Layer up with cozy knits, scarves, or jackets for visual depth and warmth.
- Mix textures instead of patterns — think corduroy, flannel, or soft wool.
- Bring a neutral blanket; it doubles as a cozy prop and keeps everyone comfy between shots!

Keeping Kids Happy During Your Session
If you have little ones, don’t stress — some of the best photos happen in between the poses!
Bring snacks, let your kids explore, and embrace the messy, real moments. Kids love crunching through leaves, playing peek-a-boo, or showing off their favorite sticks — and those candid giggles often become everyone’s favorite shots.

Top 3 Minneapolis Parks for Fall Family Photos
If you’re unsure where to go, here are my top recommendations:

Fall Family Photos Are About Connection
At the heart of every session is connection — not perfection. Whether your kids are giggling, running wild, or snuggling close, the real beauty lies in capturing your family exactly as you are.
Fall is fleeting, but these photos let you hold onto the warmth, laughter, and love long after the leaves have fallen.
