Falling in Love with Artificial Light in Photography: A Journey at Eden Strader’s Workshop

This past March, I had the incredible opportunity to attend an artificial light workshop organized by Eden Strader in New York City. As a photographer, falling in love with artificial light opens up a world of possibilities. Whether it’s capturing those special wedding day moments, shooting in indoor studios, or snapping post-sunset first dances, artificial light truly transforms the game. The best part? The setup and gear can be seamlessly transferred between different sessions and weddings. Thus, making it a versatile skill to master.

The excitement of learning something new and transformative in photography was palpable. With artificial light, the ability to control and manipulate light becomes an art form in itself. The versatility it offers allows for creativity beyond natural light limitations. This ensures that every photo session, regardless of the time of day or setting, can be beautifully illuminated.

The Workshop Experience + Vendors

We kicked off with a walkthrough of a mock ceremony and first dance. The styling was luxe and stunning, making every shot look visually amazing. Eden guided us through different storytelling and flat lay opportunities, teaching us how to use artificial light in various situations with different settings and techniques. The hands-on approach ensured that we could apply what we learned in real-time, making the lessons stick.

I photographed an incredible couple, Kai and Garrett, and a stunning bridal model, Hai. The diversity in this shoot was fantastic, showcasing different styles and looks. Kai looked stunning in a gown from Kleinfeld Bridal and Netta BenShabu Elite Couture, while Garrett looked dashing in suits from The Groom Shop by Michael Andrews and Prada. Hai was a vision in her gown from Kleinfeld Bridal and Tal Kedem Bridal, each look carefully curated to highlight the beauty of the designs under artificial light.

A huge shoutout to the amazing vendors who made this workshop possible! The floral arrangements by Vivi Fleurz added a touch of elegance to every shot. Kai’s makeup, done by Willow House Beauty, was flawless, and the bridal styling by Agency 8 Bridal Stylist was on point. These talented professionals truly brought the vision to life, enhancing every workshop element.

Working with such diverse subjects not only made the experience more enjoyable but also demonstrated the versatility of artificial light. Whether it was capturing the romantic connection between Kai and Garrett or the elegance of Hai’s bridal look, each shot told a unique story. This diversity enriched the workshop, providing a wide range of scenarios to apply our newfound skills.
